Terms of Service

Welcome to Thread. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Thread web application and related services (the "Service") operated by the person or entity listed in our Impressum("we," "us," or "our").

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, you may not use the Service.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under 18, you must have parental or guardian consent to use the Service and to agree to these Terms. By using the Service, you represent and warrant that you meet these eligibility requirements.

2. Accounts

To use certain features of the Service, you must create an account. You agree to:

  • Provide accurate, current, and complete information when creating your account
  • Maintain and promptly update your account information
  • Keep your password secure and not share it with anyone
  • Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account
  • Accept responsibility for all activity under your account

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

3. Your Content and Ownership

You own your content.Documents, notes, worldbuilding materials, and other content you create in Thread ("Your Content") remain yours.

By using the Service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, sync, display, and process Your Content solely for the purpose of providing the Service to you. This includes:

  • Storing Your Content locally in your browser (IndexedDB) and, if you subscribe to a paid plan, on our servers (Supabase)
  • Synchronizing Your Content across your devices if you have a paid plan
  • Processing Your Content through AI features when you choose to use them (see AI Features Disclosure)
  • Displaying Your Content to you within the Service

We do not claim ownership of Your Content. We will not use Your Content for any purpose other than providing the Service to you without your explicit permission. We will not train AI models on Your Content.

4. AI-Powered Features

Thread offers AI-powered features including suggestions, rewrites, spell check, connection analysis, and semantic search. When you use these features:

  • Your content is sent to OpenRouter (our AI service provider) for processing. OpenRouter routes your request to an appropriate AI model.
  • AI output is generated based on your input but is not guaranteed to be accurate, appropriate, or useful. You should review all AI-generated output before using it.
  • You own your input and output. Neither Thread nor OpenRouter claims ownership of content you provide or content generated in response.
  • OpenRouter does not use your content for model training.
  • AI features are optional. The Free tier does not include AI calls. On paid tiers, a monthly call limit applies.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use the Service to create, store, or share content that:

  • Violates any applicable law or regulation
  • Infringes on the intellectual property rights of others
  • Contains malware, viruses, or harmful code
  • Is obscene, pornographic, or exploitative, especially involving minors
  • Constitutes harassment, hate speech, or threats
  • Attempts to exploit, hack, or disrupt the Service
  • Uses the Service for unauthorized automated access (scraping, bots)
  • Impersonates another person or entity

6. Subscriptions and Payment

Free tier: The Free tier is available at no cost with limited features (up to 3 projects, no AI calls, no cloud sync). No payment information is required.

Paid tiers: The Writer and Worldbuilder tiers require a paid subscription. By subscribing, you agree to the following:

  • Pricing: Prices are displayed on our pricing page and are subject to change with 30 days' notice.
  • Auto-renewal: Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period (monthly or annual) unless you cancel before the renewal date.
  • Billing: We charge the payment method on file at the beginning of each billing period. Your subscription is processed by Polar (polar.sh).
  • Cancellation: You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. You will retain access to paid features until then.
  • Downgrade: After cancellation, your account will revert to the Free tier. Cloud-synced content exceeding Free tier limits will remain accessible in read-only mode for 30 days to allow you to export.
  • Refunds: We do not offer refunds for partial billing periods. If you believe you were charged in error, contact us at contact@use-thread.com.
  • Free trial: If we offer a free trial period, you will not be charged until the trial ends. We will notify you before the trial ends. You can cancel at any time during the trial at no charge.

7. Intellectual Property

The Service itself, including its design, code, logos, and documentation, is owned by Thread and its licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. This Terms does not grant you any right to use our trademarks, trade dress, or branding.

Your Content remains yours. We claim no ownership over Your Content (see Section 3).

8. Termination

You may terminate your account at any time by contacting us or deleting your account through the Service.

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, with or without notice. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you before termination unless doing so would compromise security or legal obligations.

Upon termination:

  • Your right to use the Service ends immediately
  • Your data will be deleted within 30 days of termination, except where retention is required by law
  • Sections regarding ownership, disclaimers, liability limitations, and governing law will survive termination

9. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not warrant that:

  • The Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free
  • Results from the Service (including AI-generated output) will be accurate, reliable, or complete
  • Any errors in the Service will be corrected

AI-generated content: Suggestions, rewrites, spell checks, and other AI output are provided for informational and creative assistance only. You are solely responsible for reviewing, verifying, and deciding whether to use any AI-generated content. We make no guarantees about the quality, accuracy, or appropriateness of AI output.

10. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THREAD, ITS OPERATORS, EMPLOYEES, OR AFFILIATES BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF PROFITS, OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SERVICE, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall not exceed the total amount you paid to us in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or €100, whichever is greater.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Thread, its operators, employees, and affiliates from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from:

  • Your use of the Service
  • Your Content that you upload or create
  • Your violation of these Terms
  • Your violation of any applicable law or the rights of a third party

We respect intellectual property rights. If you believe any content on the Service infringes your copyright, please file a DMCA notice with our designated agent. For full details and contact information, see our DMCA/Copyright Policy.

13. Privacy

Your use of the Service is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated by reference into these Terms.

14. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. For material changes, we will:

  • Post the updated Terms on this page with a new "Last updated" date
  • Notify you via email or a prominent notice in the Service
  • For California residents, provide 30 days' notice before material changes take effect

Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

15. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding its conflict of laws provisions.

Dispute resolution: Before initiating any legal proceedings, you agree to attempt to resolve disputes informally by contacting us at contact@use-thread.com. We will attempt to resolve the matter within 30 days. If the dispute cannot be resolved informally, the courts of Ludwigsfelde, Germany shall have exclusive jurisdiction.

For consumers residing in the EU, the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform is available at https://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr. We are not obligated to participate in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.

16. Miscellaneous

  • Severability: If any provision of these Terms is held to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.
  • Entire agreement: These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Acceptable Use Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Thread regarding the Service.
  • Assignment: You may not assign your rights or obligations under these Terms without our written consent. We may assign our rights without your consent.
  • No waiver: Failure to enforce any right under these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that right.
  • Force majeure: We are not liable for any failure to perform obligations due to events beyond our reasonable control, including acts of God, natural disasters, war, terrorism, riots, or internet disruptions.
