AI Features Disclosure

Effective: April 27, 2026 · Last updated: April 27, 2026

Thread offers artificial intelligence (AI) powered features to assist with writing and worldbuilding. This disclosure explains how these features work, how your data is processed, and what you should know before using them. This page supplements our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

1. Which Features Use AI

The following Thread features are powered by AI:

  • Suggestions: Text suggestions generated based on your document content and context.
  • Rewrite: Rewriting selected text in a different style, tone, or length.
  • Spell check: AI-powered spelling and grammar corrections.
  • Connection analysis: Identifying relationships and connections between your documents.
  • Semantic search: Finding relevant content across your documents based on meaning, not just keywords.

AI features are available on paid tiers (Writer and Worldbuilder) and are subject to monthly call limits. The Free tier does not include AI features.

2. How AI Processing Works

When you use an AI-powered feature in Thread:

  1. You initiate a request by clicking a button, selecting text, or otherwise choosing to use an AI feature.
  2. Relevant text from your document is sent to our AI service provider, OpenRouter (openrouter.ai), which routes the request to an appropriate AI model.
  3. The AI model processes your input and generates a response (suggestion, rewrite, analysis, etc.).
  4. The response is returned to you within the Thread interface.

AI features are always initiated by you. Thread does not send your content to AI models automatically or in the background without your action.

3. What Data Is Processed

When you use an AI feature, the following data may be sent to OpenRouter:

  • Selected text: The text you select for rewrite, spell check, or analysis.
  • Context text: Surrounding text from the same document needed to generate relevant suggestions.
  • Instruction or prompt: The type of AI operation you requested (e.g., "rewrite in a formal tone").
  • Metadata: Minimal metadata about the request (e.g., feature type, model preference).

We do not send your entire project or all your documents. Only the specific text relevant to your request is transmitted. Documents you have not interacted with via AI features are never sent to AI models.

4. AI Training and Your Content

Your content is not used to train AI models. OpenRouter, our AI service provider, does not use the content you send through Thread for model training purposes. The content is processed solely to fulfill your request and generate a response.

We configure our API calls to OpenRouter with zero data retention settings where available, meaning your input and output are not stored by the AI provider beyond what is needed to process your request.

5. Ownership of AI Output

You own your input. The text you provide to AI features remains yours.

You own your output. AI-generated suggestions and rewrites become your content when you choose to insert them into your document. Neither Thread nor OpenRouter claims ownership of AI-generated content you choose to use.

AI is a tool, not a creator. AI features are designed to assist your creative process, not replace it. You are the author and decision-maker. You decide whether to accept, modify, or discard AI suggestions.

6. Accuracy and Limitations

AI-powered features have limitations you should be aware of:

  • No guarantee of accuracy: AI-generated content may contain errors, inaccuracies, inconsistencies, or fabricated information ("hallucinations"). Always review AI output carefully before using it.
  • No guarantee of appropriateness: AI output may occasionally be irrelevant, repetitive, or unsuitable for your intended purpose.
  • Creative context: AI features do not fully understand the context, lore, or world of your project. Suggestions may not align with your established facts or style.
  • Not professional advice: AI-generated content is for creative assistance only and should not be relied upon for legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice.

7. Transparency and Labeling

In accordance with the EU AI Act and FTC guidelines, Thread is committed to transparency about AI use:

  • AI-generated content is labeled within the interface when it appears, so you always know when text was produced by AI.
  • AI features are clearly identified with distinct icons and labels. You will always know when you are using an AI feature.
  • Usage tracking: Your remaining AI call count is visible in the interface. You always know how many AI calls you have available.

8. Opting Out of AI Features

AI features are entirely optional. You can choose not to use them at any time:

  • Free tier: Does not include any AI features. No content is ever sent to AI models.
  • Paid tiers: AI features are available but never automatic. You must actively choose to use them.
  • No penalty for not using AI: All core writing and worldbuilding features work independently of AI. You can use Thread fully without ever using an AI feature.

9. Security and Processing

When your content is sent to OpenRouter for processing:

  • Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS)
  • Processing occurs in real-time and is not permanently stored by OpenRouter
  • We use zero data retention settings where available
  • Responses are returned directly to your browser and not stored on our servers beyond what is necessary to deliver the feature
